Whether they’re grilled over charcoal, seared, flame broiled or even battered and deep fried, burgers have become the closest thing America has to a “national food.”

But what makes a great burger? Is it the quality of the meat that is most important, or the technique used in preparing it? Could it be the buttery-ness of the bun? And what about the toppings? While a burger purest might demand nothing more than a bun and a slab of ground beef, for many of us the variables offered by toppings alone can make or break a burger. The debate rages on, but one thing’s for sure — a champion must be crowned.
